Whistling Straits (Haven, WI) 2011 19th Hole Staff Ranking: Five Golf Balls (A Signature 19th Hole)
To conclude our annual staff golf outing, we headed to The American Club's Whistling Straits. Upon arrival, you know why this resort course is in the top 100 public and greatest golf course lists according to any golf publication - its simply magnificent.
Transformed from gentle and flat farm land with thousands of truckloads full of soil, Whistling Straits is home to two Pete Dye golf courses - The Straits Course and The Irish Course. Thankfully, the clubhouse at Whistling Straits accommodates guests who are playing either course.
The stone Clubhouse and adjoining restaurant plus event's facility (see photo bottom right) look like they were plucked from the Old Course itself and set atop a hill to overlook what Dye created (in this case, it stands directly above the greens for the 9th and 18th holes - see photo top right). Everything in the clubhouse, from the pro-shop to the bar that sits next to the men's locker room are all first class.
Don't skip the opportunity to enjoy lunch or dinner (or breakfast for that matter) at the Whistling Straits Restaurant. The restaurant has received numerous accolades including the Three Diamond Award from AAA and Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence. Be sure to perch yourself on the covered deck so you can take in the views of the course and Lake Michigan beyond while enjoying entrees such as their Shrimp Salad Crossiant sandwich or the Seared Georges Bank Scallops.
Important Notes: The Whistling Straits Restaurant offers a Seafood Special on Friday's (for lunch or dinner). Plus, as can be attested to by one of our staff members, be sure to not look past the dessert menu - apparently the Cheesecake Triology is amazing (as he got it for lunch one day and "to-go" the next day when departing for the airport).
