Erin Hills Golf Club (Erin, WI) 2011 19th Holes Staff Ranking: Four Golf Balls (Eagle)
For this year's annual staff outing, we found ourselves traveling to the Badger State (or Cheesehead State) - aka Wisconsin. With nearly 100 degree weather left behind us at our respective homes, we touched down in Milwaukee and quickly made our way over to Erin, WI - home of Erin Hills Golf Club.
Erin Hills was designed by golf architects Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry, and Ron Whitten and opened in 2006 to much critical acclaim. While some of the holes have been changed since its initial opening, much of the course has stayed the same due to its tremendous use of nature (nearly zero human intervention was needed in this design).
At the time of our 19th hole review, Erin Hills was nearing completion on their new "Manor House" which will include a new locker room, kitchen, and restaurant ("The Village Clubhouse" with back porch) just in time for the 2011 US Amateur. While the executive chef noted to us that his new kitchen in the Manor House will make his present kitchen look like a closet, he was happy to describe to us how they will not be losing touch with their present 19th hole offerings - otherwise known as The Pub. The Pub incorporates all of the aspects you would likely find in an Irish/Scottish pub with a large wooden bar and familiar photos/memorabilia. For larger groups, be sure to take your food and beverage outback on the beautiful stone porch. Try the wings with the Irish BBQ sauce and a Black-and-Tan after your round...you won't be disappointed.
Important Notes: The 2011 US Amateur will be held at Erin Hills from August 22nd-28th. The US Open will be held at this same challenging golf course in 2017.
